You will often hear me say, “Treat yourself like you matter.”

Take the actions like you’re deserving of wealth. The actions come first – the feelings come second.

You contribute to others, you are there for family and/or friends, you do great work for your customers and/or clients, you care about others, and want to improve the planet.

The point is that the foundations of building wealth are about treating yourself like you matter.

You have to first take the actions that demonstrate that you value yourself. If you don’t value yourself, how can you expect others to value you?

You have to put yourself first in line for the money you earn; you have to treat yourself like you matter; you have to pay yourself first.

Whenever I am being interviewed, whether on a podcast, in print media, or on a major broadcast network, I put the host on the spot and ask them two questions:

  1. Have you heard of the expression pay yourself first?
  2. Can you explain what it means?

Rarely do I get the correct answer, and yet this is the foundational concept of the wealthy. It has been practiced by the wealthy for over 5000 years. It has withstood the test of time.

If you read the book, The Richest Man in Babylon, you realize this concept has been explained and available to the masses for over 100 years.

It doesn’t matter what form of money we talk about, gold, silver, coins, fiat currencies, or crypto – the concept is still foundational.

It took me three times before I could practice it consistently and without fail. It didn’t matter if I earned $100, or $10,000, I set aside 10% to keep for the rest of my life, and used that money to invest and create my passive income.

For three years, starting at age 50, I religiously paid myself first $500 per month from my $5000 per month earnings.

With that $18,000, and additional money I borrowed, I was able to invest with two others and grow it to millions of dollars over the next five years.
