It seems like there are comics lately that I can use to talk about money, like crypto-currencies, or this week, someone who wins the lottery.
To start the conversation, here is my favorite Warren Buffet quote:
“Of the billionaires I have known, money just brings out the basic traits in them. If they were jerks before they had money, they are simply jerks with a billion dollars.” – Warren Buffet
The corollary to Mr. Buffet’s quote would be that if you are a good person, a kind person, and a grateful person and you become rich, you will still be that good, kind and grateful person.
Unfortunately, if you do not know how to handle money effectively, you will likely lose it. That’s what happens to lottery winners: Within three years of winning the lottery about 70% are in debt beyond what they won.
The points I am making here are:
- You can become rich and your basic traits will stay intact.
- If you do not know how to handle money effectively, it is not likely that you can become rich.
- If you win the lottery, get an inheritance, or win a lawsuit, and you do not know how to handle money effectively, you will probably lose it.
