I recently attended an event where Larry Broughton spoke. You may not have heard of him; he was being interviewed by my business coach, James Malinchak. Larry owns Broughton Hotels and is an example of a business leader, and someone who gives back to the community. His net worth is estimated to be $300 million and he talks about leading a life of significance being more important than success. Previously, Larry and I had only met by phone, so it was great to meet him in person.

The point is that Larry was a Green Beret and his training was that each member of the team has a special skill, whether natural or developed does not matter. Others in the team had their weak areas. NO ONE was to focus improving their weak areas; that was a waste of time. What they did was rely on someone else in the team who was strong in the area when they were weak. That made the entire team strong, and with only 12 members they could defeat an enemy that was many times larger. The same applies in business.

When you look at your own strengths and weaknesses, your natural talents are a part of your strengths. Rather than trying to improve your weaknesses, whether it’s in marketing, technology, accounting, or whatever, you can pair with someone who is strong in your weak area.

In too many businesses, when an employee is having an evaluation with their manager, the focus is about improving the weak areas. It is like the parent who has a child that comes home with a report card with all A’s and B’s, but one C or D grade, and the parent wastes time focusing on what is weak rather than letting the child excel where they are strong. And it should not matter if the strong area is art, music, sports, math or science.

My own skills allowed me to make millions of dollars in investments while never really earning a lot of money from my work or career. It took me 5 decades to realize that I should just do what comes naturally to me, and let someone else take care of the stuff I’m weak at and hate to do. I believe that is the right thing to do. And I also believe I have a responsibility to share my knowledge with others, and the other thing that comes naturally is the ease of teaching others about how money really works and coaching them to succeed.
